Personal background |
Hello. I'm from a little town in North Carolina (Born, raised, left for a while, and have now returned). I've been around a touch over 40 years. I work as a software tester, but being a southerner and all, I really enjoy the outdoors (Farming, hunting, fishing, gardening and the like). I also enjoy the evening sky. I have a small telescope and have lots of fun viewing the planets and other far away places. One of these days I'm gonna get a radio telescope so I can listen for myself. I've seen where other folks have built themselves one in there back yard and I figure I can do the same thing. All it takes is time and money (I guess I had better get back to work!). |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Well if there's not life out there "It would be an awful waste of space" (A phrase from the movie Contact). I think we'll find it someday and I think listening is the best way. To me, a huge benefit would be just knowing we are not alone. Oh I could think of bunches of other benefits but I'm not going to ramble on. The danger, who knows, I think as a world/people it's worth the risk though. I run SETI@home because I want to do my part. I want to know as much as everyone else what is out there. I would love to someday explore space. I think the SETI project is great and hope it continues. My suggestion for/to the project is: assist folks who are interested (like myself) in setting up a small dish and receiver for listening. With broadband/cable modem now days the data could be sent/linked directly back to SETI. Imagine several hunderd radio telescopes listening around the world. A lot more sky could be covered than what is currently being covered. The cost would have to be reasonable though. Not more than a couple-a-thousand (if that). |
