Personal background |
I am a B.Sc. Computer Science student at the University of Calgary, currently taking summer courses in order to get ahead on the final year of my degree. I am interested in Embedded System design and Security. While those are my primary interests, I also am somewhat interested in the areas of Operating System design, Distributed Systems (of course!), and a myriad of others.
After I get this degree, I am looking at a M.Sc. in Computer Science, a M.A. in Education, and a Master's degree in Theology(!). If I ever have the time, in my life, to devote to relearning mathematical and physical principles properly, I may pursue a degree in Astrophysics. Until then, however, I remain mathematically retarded, to my great chagrin.
I love to travel, even though I have only travelled for a 3-week period in my life. I spent a week touring London (and area), England, and then spent two weeks living with friends in T'bilisi, Georgia. I very much want to go back to Georgia, and I would like to visit Russia. Also on my list are Wales (very high priority), Argentina (very high priority), and a million others that I won't list here because you all have a globe.
One thing about me that will eventually facilitate travel is that I love languages. I seem to have been gifted with the ability to pick them up fairly quickly. During my high school years I took Japanese, French, and Latin. I am currently taking Spanish courses. After attaining near-fluency, I aspire to learn Welsh and Russian.
That's about all about me that's important. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1. Do you think extraterrestrial life exists?
No.
What are the possible benefits and dangers of the discovery of ET life?
Dangers include technology exchange, anything that would theoretically violate the so-called "prime directive" (no, I am not a trekkie, I just think they had some reasonable ideas), and the annihilation of the human race.
Benefits include possible earth-bound peace. That's all I can come up with.
2. Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find?
We already are. I think that if I end up being wrong on point #1, it might be beneficial to paint our species in a little better light. Our radio and television signals aren't exactly examples of our brightest moments (I watched an entire episode of Titus yesterday, ugh). Any information we send should include biological basics of our species, illustrations of our relation to other humans and other species on the planet, mathematical principles we use, illustrations of our various govermental styles, and philosophical and religious ponderings (however difficult this will be to "encode").
3. Why do you run SETI@home?
I am a Computer Scientist, interested partially in distributed systems and computation. As this is one of the best examples of a successful distributed computation project, I naturally felt interested. As I am also interested in astronomy, this is an intriguing project. My interest is therefore purely academic.
That is all. |
