Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
If ET life exists then it will be discovered when the time is right to discover it. It is very possible that other life out there is already aware of us and is awaiting the time when we are advanced enough to be contacted, or advanced enought to be capable of contacting it.

On a relative scale, contact with such life is no more or no less dangerous than contacting an undiscovered culture on our own planet was in our own local period of exploration. When we "civilised" the natives we were introducing modern techniques that we had discovered, into a much simpler culture in order to bring it up to "our standards" as they were. Our own history tells us about the successes and failures of such well-meaning encounters!

Any contact with ET life could be thought of in a similar way, only in reverse as we are the "primitive" culture that is being introduced to far superior techniques and technology being brought to us by a more advanced civilisation. This also puts us into a similar situation as the natives that we were trying to civilize, and into the same dangers of being repressed by a more advanced and possibly overbearing culture...

Although advanced contact could have a positive benefit, it could be a very bad idea given the current governmental climates. Mankind would wipe itself out in a very short space of time, as mis-use of such technology and advancement is almost inevitable.

We do not yet have such a thing as the "prime directive" in force, but it is entirely likely that other life out there does...
