Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
There is every chance that extraterrestrial life exists, every chance that it wont like us and a very good possibility that it is really difficult to find.

If we do find another species that wants to communicate then whats to say we don't end up with an independance day scenario, but at the same time whos to say that they are not just too arrogant, and posh that they don't want to associate with us because they have advanced so far.

Maybe they are out there but they are still at the cave men stage. Or maybe they are right in front of us but they just like to watch, wouldn't that be irronic.

Still its nice to know someone or something else is there, so a becon is a good idea because no matter if it causes a war, or brings in new hope and knowledge, it will still be benificial to humanity in the long run.

So let them know we are here, let them know that we want to trade something, knowledge, resources, experience earth as a holiday destination, something to entice them to come 3 million light years and have a very big sleep on the way.

But make sure they can understand it, make it a simple message, an image or a sound, that can have no other meaning then what you are trying to say. Something universal before you get in trouble :P

SETI at Home gives me piece of mind that there are projects and endevours out there that are bigger then the individual and make you feel part of a whole.

It is an enormous undertaking and may eventually find something worth while, but while your there try using the data to get more acurate information about the universe too so that the information is not just discarded if it is not needed.

Make the SETI@Home system less graphical and allow you to set the prossesor utilisation on the main program so as to allow for higher throughput and pehaps run the program in the background while you are doing non processor intensive work, like wordprocessing.
