Personal background
Hello! I'm 47 and I'm a Data Officer with the Fisheries department for FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) in Rome, Italy. I've worked for FAO seven years now and this is the best job I've ever had so I'll probably stay the distance and eventually retire from this position. You may ask - what makes the job so interesting? I've worked in many environments during my career and this is the most eclectic one I've ever experienced. For instance, on any given day, I may attend a meeting with computer professionals, scientists, economists, lawyers or diplomats. At that same meeting, there may be natives of almost any country around the world (e.g. Tunisia, Thailand Cambodia, England, etc...). Every day is different and new challenges constantly present themselves.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes - I truly believe that exterrestrial life exists. With the magnitude of the universe, it makes zero sense to believe that our planet is the only one populated. To believe we're alone in the universe is extremely egotistical.

I think that life on other planets will be discovered eventually but I doubt that we will be able to communicate with it for quite a while. There are many forms of life on earth and many ways of communication already exist between these forms but humans don't comprehend them yet (e.g. dolphins, whales, etc.). Therefore, it is unreasonable to expect that we'll be able to communicate with whatever lifeform we first encounter.

I think that the effort should be expended though. I believe that we have to attempt contact with exterrestrial life so that humans could grow beyond the confines of this planet. For what information I would send - I still believe that the Sagen plates on Voyager were the best attempts made so far and the substance of this information remains valid.

I run Seti@Home because I believe fully in this effort. It is a way to contribute something to mankind.

For a suggestion, I would recommend that better guidelines be presented for enabling the continuous execution of Seti@Home on a PC. For instance, on my PCs, the program is running constantly 24 hrs./day - not just as a screensaver. With Windows NT, I have the program priority set low so it never hinders my day-to-day work. Not all Seti@Home operators are aware of this possibility so IMHO this should be publicized.
