Personal background
I'm from Exeter RI, a nice rural town south of Providence. I'm a 28 y/o electrical engineer who likes to drink, garden, ski, and look out at the stars through my scanning electron microscope.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. There is no proof that there is an intelligent ET. However, chances are there is. It is unlikely that we will discover it in our lifetime. I think we need about another 250 years or so to develop the appropriate technology to probe sufficiently. If we do prove that there is life out there the benefit is that earthlings will finally come together as a world. Unfortunately, there is a serious danger. The ET's may have the technology to travel to earth and eat everyone.

2. I don't think humans should transmit a beacon that can be traced back to earth. A rogue alien race may trace it back to us and harvest all resources on earth. You have to consider the nature of living things. We have no clue about what kind of life is out there.

3. I run SETI@home because I love being able to help in the search for ET. I think the project is great. Not only is it a great source in it's intrinsic sense. It has also proven to be one of the most powerfull computing methods in history.
