Profile: Tom Dyer

Personal background
I am a 20 year old Electronic Engineering student at Southampton University.

I am a member of the University photography society and I am also involved in the University Gliding club.

I am also partial to a bit of scuba diving, canoeing and cycling.

I run a webserver on my home computer at http://www.frodo248.servebeer.com This will have more information on my life, loves and work.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I happen to believe that it is a mathematical certainty that life exists somewhere else in the universe. Whether it is close enough to contact or be contacted and their level of technical ability is another question entirely.

We should definately try to establish contact with another race as it is a reasonable assumption that if they are of similar ability to us they may have their own version of SETI running on their home planet looking for us. In a way we are already transmitting beacons into space. One thing I wonder about is, will an alien race want to make contact with us after watching Jerry Springer!! It's enough to make anyone stay away. If we did transmit an intentional beacon then it would be very hard to decide on something to put in it as they certainly wouldn't know how to interpret anything we sent them. One solution would be to make it obvious it came from an intelligent source and just let them know where to find us.

I run SETI@Home because I run a webserver at home and it is a shame to leave a few computers on all day doing almost nothing. At least this way I am contributing to something larger than anything else.
