Profile: Richard & Maribel

Personal background
I am a 34 year old male living in Ohio, USA. I have done almost every concievable occupation, but gave that up to become an Electrical Engineer. While working as an EE, I began to program, and soon adopted it as my current career. I have been working as a programmer-analyst consultant / contractor for the past year while studying in preparation for the MCAT.

I am planning on entering Medical School to pursue a career in Medicine along several venues; I would like to conduct research while maintaining a limited practice on the side.

I have enjoyed participating in SETI since its inception through a variety of accounts spread acrossed my personal and work computer systems. I have recently built a new system consisting of an Athlon 1700 , 512 Mbytes of DDR @200MHz connected via cable modem. My average work unit time has dropped from 180 hours on my old Pentium 133, 98Mbyte @ 66MHz to 12 hours.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I find it difficult to discount the possibility of extraterrestrial life within a universe of such unimaginable vastness. Through the endless, and perhaps infinite, number of transactions that have spanned the billions of years the universe has existed, I cannot imagine that self-awareness has not been arrived at elsewhere in the universe.

As for transmitting a beacon, I don't see what it could hurt? As for what we should send, that would not be a question that is easily, or quickly, answered. At minimum, it should represent at least what we would hope to find through SETI in terms of being non-random and intelligibly distinguishable above the omnipresent background noise.

I run SET@home simply because I feel that it is an available and worthwhile use for my spare processor time. As for my views, I think that it is an ingenious idea, and may well lead the way for other similar projects focused on universal public service.

Without thoroughly exploring the entire program, I would not want to try and make any suggestions at this time. But I appreciate the opportunity to share any that may occur to me:)
