Personal background
I am a, married, Christian, college graduated, gainfully employed, home owning, dog owning, outdoor loving, conservative republican from the state of Idaho. Before you go thinking of the typical Liberal view of one such as I, consider that I don't like poisoned water or air, I hate seeing litter, it saddens me that extinction occurs, and I care deeply that people are suffering all over the world. How can I be a republican? Simple, most republicans are like me. We just don't let emotions guide our thought process. We realize that humans are more important than the environment, but that the environment that supports us demands proper respect. We don't believe in the redistribution of wealth, (Star Trekian lack of money would be great, but if I earn a buck, let me decide who I want to help with it), we don't believe in most regulations that should be common sense that end up limiting other freedoms, and we don't agree with the idea that the Government should help those who refuse to help themselves. And we firmly believe that most people can indeed help themselves. Why SETI? Does being a Christian mean it is blasphemous to search for life out there? Not at all. The Bible speaks very little on the creation of the universe as a whole. Even as a Christian, it would be arrogant for me to assume that God created life on only our world, and placed the rest of the void about us as a great surrounding mobile, spinning infinitely away to the ends of time. On the other hand, if this program goes on for 100 more years, and by that time we are able to cover the entirety of the sky. Wouldn't it be odd if there were no other signals? It would be as if we were a unique project, and not a cosmic randomization of molecules that somehow broke the laws of entropy to evolve into the mammals that discovered God, and then discarded Him for the Theory I have just touched on.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The SETI project is a thing of excitement, and apprehension. If we find life, the world at large will engage in further prosecution of those who live life based on a faith religion. If we don't find life, ever, despair may creep into the lives of those who can't accept a higher power. They would be utterly alone in the universe. The project is uniquely geared towards impersonal world cooperation. It is the only way you could ever unite so many people with diverse backgrounds, religions, ethnicity, and beliefs, without the whole project crashing to the ground within the first few months. Ahh the age of computers, we don't have to see who we are in league with, we just pretend they are exactly like us. At least until now. With the addition of the profiles, you can all see that I am nothing like you. And that you are nothing like anyone else who takes the time to create a profile. And that, is what makes human life incredible. When we do meet E.T. I am sure it will be with awe, and a sense that we just don't match up. That’s the liberal in you talking, that the part of you that thinks you are not good enough. Don't believe it. And remember, the only way E.T. was able to contact us was through the foresight of members of their race who risked everything to build the technology that will astound us. They didn't do that by feeling like the government should take care of them, and do things for them. It will be entrepreneurs like the SETI project leaders, staking reputation on a hope. Make no mistake, this project is not just crunching numbers to keep your computer running, it is changing life as we know it...What a rush!
