Profile: EggMan

Personal background
Currently I am an 18year old first-year student of Middlesex University studying Computer Science (Graphics and Games) in London of the UK. I like to play games with my mates - hosting and attending LAN parties as often as I can, LANs are so much more fun than playing online against random people and if you haven’t gone to one then go!
I like pretty much all things sci-fi and enjoy creating and editing my own games using programs like Worldcraft (now called Valve Hammer Editor) and am just starting to get into Java programming with my course –Creativity – its the way forward!
I also practice the martial art of Tae Kwon Do, a now Olympic sport where I have loads of fun sparring against my peers and generally getting a good work out. I recommend taking up a martial art if you can, as it is most invigorating!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
9I believe that extraterrestrial life exists as I cannot see how it cannot in a seemingly infinite universe of logically infinite possibilities. I really don’t think it is likely that we will discover this life until us humans manage to either get along in our small world or at least to get the major powers to get along and sort ourselves out with an efficient method of inter-stellar travel, which, (unfortunately) does not exactly seem that soon!
9There are many benefits and dangers of such a discovery but it all depends on the life that we discover and how we discover it, for instance do we discover it by accidentally crushing one of their life-forms with one of our space ships (or vice versa), or do we discover them by formally communicating electronically before making contact? Both have different ramifications; although I think we all know which one we would prefer!
“Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? If so, what information should we send?”
9In answer to the above question I do not believe that we should leave beacons with information concerning our race for others to find until we have found out more about them, as like as not the extraterrestrials that might find such a beacon might take it into their heads to come up to our planet with an idea to take control especially with the world the way it is – conflicting nations here there and everywhere who are very unlikely to cooperate in such a precarious situation, resulting in chaos an the weakness that could destroy us. I realise that it could also be argued that such an event would unite us, but the world being what it is right now, I cannot see this happening easily.
Why do I run SETI on my PC? Well I just think it’s a cool idea to help the search for intelligent life, being a sci-fi fan but also because it is a bloody good idea to get people around the world to use their vacant processing power to process data to help others! Make your PC's Useful! :-)
