Personal background
I am married, father of two:

I live in Birmingham, AL and am a webmaster and network/system administrator at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

I am constantly searching this planet for intelligent life...why not utilize wasted energies looking above?

Is our society open to contact with extraterrestrial life? Perhaps, but we'll never know until it happens in the open...

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I look forward to the eventual shift toward more advanced communications technologies, enabling us to do wider searches over greater frequencies which will, hopefully, more resemble the methods by which advanced civilizations communicate than our current, primitive radio.

OTOH, if extraterrestrial signals are found, I don't see how any of them would be corroborated by additional, later (in time) reception in/near the same coordinates, as they would most likely be a moving target. Any such claim (such as that currently espoused by SETI) that ET will not move so that we can confirm its signal is silly. Unfortunately, it is how SETI is structured for now...
