Profile: Robert Walter

Personal background
I am a native of Montana and live in the Tobacco Root Mountains in Southwestern Montana, United States. My interests are far reaching and I find our world and everything in it fascinating. One of my favorite hobbies is reading. I read in a wide range of categories but primarily science, biology, history, biography and travel topics. My only language is English but if I were to have the opportunity to learn other languages, my first two choices would be mathematics and music. I feel these would allow me to communicate in almost any country on earth and perhaps beyond.

I feel fortunate to be living on the cusp of potential advances in science, medicine and the humanities that will stretch our imaginations and perhaps require us to question what it means to be human.

I am married with children and own and operate a IGA Grocery store and a Ace Hardware store in a small town. I believe I am fortunate to be immersed in a business that puts me in contact with a constant stream of new people and new ideas. I believe that to explore and seek new things is a basic ingredient in our makeup and is what makes life interesting
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
In the strictest sense it is simply not possible to know if extraterrestrial life exists. Otherwise there would be no need for the SETI Project and we would all be in the communication business instead. It’s fun however to dream about it and to imagine the possibilities. The gamete of beliefs in UFO’s and ET’s is as large as the religious beliefs in gods and spirits and devils from other dimensions. These depend ultimately on faith and are offset by the disciplines of hard science.

SETI members must be capable visionaries and scientists to design this project and keep the science grounded and on tract. The spin offs are already visible and growing. The extension of the computer network to other branches of science and medicine may someday result in tremendous breakthroughs. The evolution in the design and operation of the basic SETI equipment coupled with the ability of the SETI Team to communicate their visions in such a manner that millions of people are willing to loan their computers to the cause and personally be part of that dream in nothing short of remarkable. Good luck and I’m glad to be a new member in this quest.
