Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do you think extraterrestrial life exists? If so, when and how will humans discover it? What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery?

Some people seem to think we've already discovered extraterrestial life. I don't think extraterrestials are going to be any stranger than some of the humans I've met on this planet. Given the sheer vastness of space, there has to be other life out there, it's just very unlikely that we'll meet in the next 1000 years.

Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? If so, what information should we send?

Sure, why not. Send our best scientific knowledge, send our best literary works, and please... don't send any Rap music.

Why do you run SETI@home? What are your views about the project? Any suggestions?

I run Seti because it symbolises what we as humans can achieve when we actually decide to work together. It shows a desire to expand our knowledge and communicate with other intelligent life. It's also pioneering the use of public distributed computing.

I do wonder sometimes that if we had just waited 5 years and then started searching the data, it might only take 1 year to get through all the data. What are we going to do with the exponential growth of computing power at our fingertips?

Gordon Gibson
