Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As far as ET goes, I really don't know. The thought is intriguing. If we do discover it it will most likely start as some sort of mathematical discovery via radio transmission simply because there will not be too many common points of reference. Who is to say that they will see or hear the way we do.For all we know they could communicate therough a sopphisticated series of pheremones. Could you just picture doing algebra with some scent glands on your butt? Just too weird!

It almost definitely will not be some little grey skinned men with funny heads and big eyes landing and giving us a Vulcan handshake, in spite of what Spieldberg (sp?) and UFO conspiracy nuts have told the American public.

I do not see any harm in actually transmitting a signal, since even if we do discover life the chance of any sort of f2f is minimal unless there are physical laws yet to be discovered that get around the ftl limit that reletivity seem to indicate exists.

As for Seti@home, it is an interesting screen saver and it is definitely a fascinating distributed computing project, even if it never discovers anyting within my lifetime. Pursuing knowledge in itself is a worthwile goal and anyting that can be done to help underpaid scientists and grad students do their job better must be appreciated.

As far as the app itself goes it would be nice to have a little more control on access to system resources, amount of RAM and such, but it installs cleanly and truly does not interfere with my everyday work.
