Profile: Shawn D

Personal background
Real Name: -classified-
M.I.B. Identification: S
M.I.B. Status: Field Agent - currently inactive
M.I.B. Clearance: Sierra-L7_A2123 - Kappa 9

Notes:
After his birth during the Zoaronian Migration of 1969, agent S was inducted into the M.I.B. 'watch list' as a preliminary trainee candidate for the Alpha-level field agent corps, given the levels of polarized eltemic radiation in the region at that time. His parents were briefed on the dangers and requirements, agreed, and were promptly neuralized to prevent unwanted subjective influence on S.

Excelling in math, physics, computer technology, etc. from his early years, S demonstrated a clear talent for science. As expected, he had a strong fascination for all things involving space travel, bordering on the obsessive. This tendency was strengthened by his status as a social outsider.

Psychological evaluations made during this period indicated that he was quite well adapated to live as an active agent, and preparations for his induction were made. He readily agreed to serve as a field agent in M.I.B. and did so quite successfully for 6 years, under the guise of USAF enlistment. See record # 78-2JM-Gate-S for details of operational record performance. At the termination of this period, agent S asked to return to civilian life. His request was granted, conditional to M.I.B. future needs. Now resides in southern U.S. under INACTIVE status.

(Please note, I am not delusional. To quote a famous cartoon character: "That there's a joke son, yuck it up!")
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) ETI life elsewhere? Very likely. Nearby? Anybody's guess.

1a) ET Discovery? Unlikely within the next 500 years until our technology has advanced sufficiently to at least send remote probes to some other star systems. (Unless a candidate planetary system is found within 100 light years or so of Earth. An intelligence there should be easily contacted with current technology.) Or we find a way to make trans-C travel possible.

1b) Benefits and Dangers: Although I personally hope for ET detection within my lifetime, I do not think the world at large is mentally, emotionally, or spiritually prepared for it. Watch the movie "Contact" for what I think is a pretty accurate depiction of the emotional mass-hysteria, religious unsettlement, and societal upset that such a detection will likely cause. Humans can barely get along with one another currently. To quote M.I.B., "A person is smart....people are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it!"

2) I do not think a deliberate beacon should be transmitted yet. We need time to mature as a species before we set about improving the odds of communication with ETI.

3) Why do I run SETI@home? Despite my view that the world at-large is quite unprepared for a detection, I personally would be gloriously happy if such a detection came. Being able to contribute to this effort helps sate my deep-seated need to contribute to the quest for knowledge: not just to SETI detection per-se, but to also assist in the largest distributed-computation experiment in the history of our little planet.
