Personal background
I'm from Baltimore, MD, USA.
I'm 41 yrs old and work as a Senior Systems Administrator administering multi-million dollar UNIX and OpenVMS servers for the Department of Defense. I find the work intersting and challenging. I imagine that the work that SETI is doing is just as interesting and challenging. That's what interests me in the project and spurs me to devote my home CPU cycles to it. I have a couple of fairly new home computers that I purchased in early 2001 that I have dedicated to this project. They are both running over my broadband cable connection. I have a COMPAQ 1.2GHz PC and a SUN Sun-Blade 100 500MHz 64-bit Ultra SPARC UNIX machine running SOLARIS 8. They both contribute as best they can and I am happy that they are doing some real work while I am at my job all day. With much luck, I'll be the one to find something of value in all the inter-stellar noise. :-)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that extraterrestrial life is a statistical certainty.
Due to the fantastic distances involved, I think that human-kind is better off listening rather than transmitting a beacon. After all, we have been inadvertantly transmitting interstellar beacons since the time of Marconi.
I run SETI@home for two reasons -- one, because I belive in the project and I think that everyone should help and two, because it is an interesting benchmark to use to note the difference in performance between my PC and my ULTRA-SPARC boxes.
