Profile: Walter Bowen

Personal background
I am from Denton, Texas. I sailed past the middle age threshhold several years back. AARP is still chasing me, but I'm not about to let them catch up. I am an admissions officer with the University of North Texas, although over the last year and a half I have spent most of my time working with systems implementation projects for our operation here.

My hobbies? I stare at Windows all day, but confess I enjoy Apple Macs a whole lot more. I am the User Group Ambassador for The Mezzanine BBS and Mac User Group here in Denton. The BBS has been more or less a guilty pleasure for over ten years now and is one of the last surviving Hermes II bulletin board systems you can still reach by dialup modem. I enjoy taking apart and refurbishing the old Macs I collect, but am thoroughly enjoying Mac OS X Panther on a G5 these days! Besides Macs, I'm into both science fiction and science fact. Favorite publications include Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, National Geographic, MacWorld and MacAddict.

My wife and I are also flag waving Weight Watcher members having shed nearly 60 pounds between us since summer, 2003, and are loving it.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I registered with SETI@home nearly five years ago, but lost touch over the years until now. It's great to be back, and a thrill to be a Planetary Society Member. Is there other life out there? I am sure there is. For my money, the more interesting question would whether we will be ready for what (and who) we eventually discover out there or vice versa. It will happen. It is only a matter of time.
