| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |

I joined Seti@home in about 2001 at the time i ran it on a 166mhz windoze machine that was perpetully crashing and it averaged about 250 hours to complete a work unit - despite the fact that the question 'mark have you found an alien yet?' was inevitably no i persevered for about 768 hours of crunching. Then after a fatal computer crash , i had forgotten about it alltogether for 6 years till the other day when following a strange dream in which a person identified herself as being from 'aiia maia', an earthlike planet i was reminded of seti and decided to have another look - to have been pleasantly surprised to find it will now crunch a work unit on my shiny new mac in about 2 hours.
The project is superb and its great to see its been a platform for other distributed computing efforts - ive been a sci fi afficianado for as long as i remember and am optimistic that somewhere out there amongst the goldilocks zones there will be other life jim. Im just proud to be a part of that little bit of effort to go looking in this odd football shaped universe of ours. |
