Profile: Earl Patin

Personal background
Am a cajun born in Louisiana and presently living in El Paso, Texas. Retired from the US Army. Retired from IBM. Served during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. In IBM, worked in hardware maintenance and design and software problem resolution (last 15 years). An inveterate DIYer, mostly in woodworking, electronics, and computers, but will try my hand at just about anything. Married to my first wife for over 51 years. Have 6 living children (all grown up and away from home) and 11 grandchildren. Oh! Almost forgot to mention that we have a monster black dog that owns us an condescends to let us live in the same house with her.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
No question about it. With all the possibilities in this Universe, we can't be the only intelligent life. When (not IF) we do establish contact with other intelligences, our concept of life will change drastically. I can't predict whether it will be for the better or the worse.

Electromagnetic signals seem an appropriate way to attempt communication with others; however, it may not be the only way and we should explore other means.
For the present, an electromagnetic beacon would definitely be a good way to attempt contact with others. The data content of such a beacon should be mathematic and based on the physical constants of elements. This would probably be the most likely to be understood and analyzed if intercepted.

I have just downloaded SETI@home and don't feel qualified to give suggestions and analyses at this time. Give me a while and watch out!
