Personal background
I am a 41 years old computer system analyst who turned recently into pipe organ building and repair for a change! I also have a solid background in photography, electronic and music. My main interest in computer sciences is "image and signal processing" but i am not bad at robotics and low-level programming. I am currently truning a QuickCam Pro 3000 into a robotized astrometric camera.

I live in Trois-Rivières, Québec, Canada and my primary language is french. I also speak english (obviously), italian and german. I sang in choirs for so many years that now i speak latin too! I am also fluent in more than 20 different computer languages.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
"So many FFTs to compute, so little time..."

I am convinced that extraterrestrial life do exist but i am not sure that the current Seti@Home project will turn out something interesting. Carl Sagan once said:

"There are so many TV transmitters now on Earth that our planet is the most powerfull radiosource in the Galaxy. But we are currently turning our communication channels over cable TV and optical fibers so that in a few hundred years, this radiosource will vanish forever."

It means that if other civilisations do evolve like ours, they will be detectables only for a tiny fraction of their lifetime... unless they WANTS to be detected. How many of those civ. do have the will and ressources to support powerfull beacons over a long period of time?

Also, did you ever used an old computer like the Apple II for example? It was fun to listen to the programs recorded on cassette tapes! Will we detect a similar signal? Certainly not: today, most of our signals are digitaly compressed and encrypted: they look and sound like random noise. Such a signal is almost impossible to detect with our current technology.

So why is my computer crunshing work units all day long? Because i have Faith and i cannot just stand there, with my arms crossed, doing NOTHING! If there is even the slimiest chance to find something, we must search for it by any means we have.
