Personal background |
My name is Morten, and I'm 31 years of age.
Danish of birth, I live in Sweden, where I study to become an engineer of orthosis with a major in prosthesis - the guy who makes peg-legs.
Prior to this I've been doing 3D-graphics, mainly for computer games, for about 10 year. I did some games on CD, but most for browsers as commercials for various products.
I guess I'm your average tech-guy, and I admit to having owned a computer back form way before anyone thought that was cool. In fact I had a computer when the C64 came out, and I can still remember the ad's promises of a better life, if only your computer was in colors. Well, enough of the old days.
Computers is what brings us together here, and as I understand most of the guys/girls are living of different computer-skills.
I personally hate computers. It has taken me more than 10 years to come to that conclusion, but there you go. It seems to me that there is a promise of a beautiful solution to any problem on a computer, but as you seek the beauty, an exponential amount of unforeseen problems arises.
Most of my friends and family does not appreciate my ambivalent take on computers, thinking that I would love nothing more, than hours worth of fun installation on their system. I gather I'm not the only one. So enough on computers.
Another thing that brings us together here is the belief of ET intelligence. I mean, if you know for a fact that there are no ETs, you wouldn't be reading this. In fact I have a hard time thinking that anyone has gotten this far in my rambling.
So what is the thought of this SETI in reality? Say we picked up ET-WNBC, and listened to their Howard Stern for a while. What difference would it make to our lives? A polite "hello" and an answer of some sort would take a lot longer than my lifetime to cross space, if coming from most any star system, so it's not like I'm waiting in anticipation for the alien next-gen microwave oven blueprints.
To me it's about being right. I like being right - always have. I have always believed that there are more worlds than ours in the universe. I'm here to prove that I'm right (or die while trying), and my waste-CPU-cycles is a cheap price to pay. They better use radio waves. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
That brings us to my thoughts about SETI@home:
1. Why do you run SETI@home?
- To prove I'm right.
2. What are your views about the project?
Something had to be done. This is a good start, and the screen saver is a strike of genius. Too bad no one thought of selective searching, thinking that the most promising star systems - the ones with known planets - should be prioritized.
3. Any suggestions?
Yep: Invent something clever that can carry communication super-light speed, or brace yourselves for the disappointing communication across generations of us, with civilizations that died out light years ago.
- "Is that supernova in the system we told 'hello' 2000 years ago???". |
