Personal background
I'm a computer programmer :) who is a christian, a watcher of perhaps a little too much sci-fi (why did they cancel Farscape?!?!!), and loves the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I most definitely believe extraterrestrial life exists. With all the possible worlds out there, why does Earth have to be the only one with life? I think it would show how great God really is if there are other worlds teaming with life as we understand it, or life that we couldn't dream possible. Surely there may be the danger of "invasion"/"attack", both the remote sci-fi kind and that of our beliefs. But without struggle, how does one grow?

Should we (humans) send a beacon for others to find? Well, I think we are already sending that beacon out in our radio and television broadcasts. Isn't that what we're looking for with SETI in a sense? The question with our broadcasts is, are we really displaying our true selves in those images/audio? And is that how we want others to see us? And I wonder, if we catch a signal from another race, will it truely show who they are?

As for sending a beacon specifically for the purpose of contacting other life, well I think it would have to be something simple. Some univeral "hi, we're hear listening, are you out there?" But how that could be done and yet not give away too much (just in case those late-night sci-fi thrillers aren't too far off), I have no idea.

I run SETI@home to be part of research that open to anyone who has a computer. The idea that we can work together, share resources in this small way gives me great hope for bigger things in life. And the idea of using existing resources, our un-used cpu time, without generating costs is wonderful. And mostly, I'm curious to see if there is intelligent life out there -- some type of life on another planet, some other lifeform -- and are they searching as we are? Are they also asking "is anyone out there?"
