Personal background
My name is Jim Kirk (No Really!) and I am a Technology Consultant (sounds better than computer geek and looks better on the invoice). I am 45 years old and live in Dublin Ireland with my wife Marie and our two daughters (one of whom is in the process of leaving home). Although Irish by birth, we lived in New York (Long Island) until the girls were born. Since then we have lived in Ireland, several years in France (I miss the sight of Mnt Blanc out the window in the morning) and back to Ireland. My hobbies include computers and Sci Fi like B5 and Trek (are we surprised?). I am trying to get a life other than computers so I am trying to learn guitar not so much in my spare time, but to help me to find some spare time. I love music, not only Clapton, Zeppelin, Floyd, Tull and Genesis, but Mozart, Bach and Vivaldi. I, for reasons that I don't even understand, have started a small collection of autographed guitars (Jethro Tull and Eric Clapton) and repeatedly tell myself it has nothing to do with recapturing the past! If we are not watching Sci Fi, our choice tends to be towards the Discovery Channel/National Geographic type channels. My younger daughter and I spend one night a week on "crime night" which would be more fun if someone would produce some new forensic detective shows we haven't seen!

I am in the market for an old Porsche 944 and have decided that if you have to give up the ideals of youth, being well paid may not be better, but it affords more opportunities!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
OK, here is where I admit that I am not sure that there is any hope of contacting aliens. I believe they exist, but the incredible size and scale of the universe could mean that even in a "densely populated" galaxy, our nearest neighbors could be an incredibly long way away. I also don't believe in UFO's or interstellar spae travel (best left to Sci Fi), but would dearly love to be proved wrong.

So why would I be involved in this project? Why do I have 3400 SETI results sent in? I believe in technology and the incredible potential of this kind of distributed processing to adress a whole range of problems, here on earth and in space. We need to map the heavens and analyse the mountains of data arriving in in ways we cant see yet, and the thought of tapping the resources of tens of thousands of people around the world is a real kick.

Besides, I am more than willing to be proved wrong and if we could not even contact et's but prove their existance and location. WOW!
