Personal background |
My nickname is Mush.
My hobbies are collecting small electronic devices, maintaining my web site, making music, vintage cameras, knitting, writing, and cooking.
I do not like cleaning house, being broke, foods with weird textures, car crashes, or incisions (even though I had a really good time getting my wisdom teeth extracted, what with the intravenous Valium and all).
My talent is swimsuit and I want to be a veterinarian because I love children.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I've been running SETI@home since 1999 on every computer I can get my hands on. This means four or five personal machines, and who knows how many employers' boxes - including the occasional Mac.
I run it for two reasons. The first is that I love the concept and implementation of distributed computing. I think it's - not to sound maudlin - a beautiful symbolism for what human beings can do when they decide to give up a tiny thing of their own (in this case, processor time) for the good of all. The impact is subtle, but still real: it makes us feel better. This self-same behavior can be applied to absolutely all fields of human endeavor to make human life a more pleasant prospect. We seem to have an aversion to 'sacrifice' in this era, but I firmly believe that giving of oneself on any level is good for the soul.
The second reason I run SETI@home is N = R* x fs x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L. |
