Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Do I think extraterrestrial life exists? Yes, this is IMHO almost certain. Some we might discover probably very soon, but I doubt they communicate via radio signals (I wouldn't do it, if I had something better.) The reason that I think we might discover them very soon, is the fact that we try to communicate with "them". If a native tribe somewhere on a lost island tries to send us some smoke signals, we would probably go there and ask them to stop that, wouldn't we?
2. Yes, we should. (See question 1.) I don't think it really matters, what we send them as long as the signal is identifiable as something artificial and as long as it is not my credit card number.
3. I think it is a great project and we can learn a lot in distributed computing and shared fun and excitement.
