Personal background
Good day/night/morning/evening to all you're SETI users around the world. My name is Ramon and I live in one of the best places in the Netherlands Tilburg the place I was born and raised about 30 years ago. I studied here to become a teacher in biology (therefore my interest in the search for (extraterrestrial) life). Although I studied to become a teacher I' am not working in that field, life can sometimes take strange paths and I' am working for over 5 years now in healthcare and still going strong. For my daily work I perform diagnostic pulmonary function tests in a hospital here in town. It’s a great job I work with al kinds of people ranging from new born babies up till 90 plus senior citizens (I can only hope ET is as much diverse as the human race). This one of the reasons I like to travel around as much as possible when you come to other countries it always struck me how much diversity and at the same time how much similarity there is between humans.
In my spare time one of the things I like to do is to get wet and dirty as much as possible (and I especially like to do this on mine mountain bike), X-country mountain biking rules!!! Besides mountain biking I do play squash and go to the fitness centre. It’s a lot of activity but it beats sitting on you’re @#% in front of the TV (or like “The Boss” put it ones so poetic “99 channels and nothing on it”). When I’ am not busy sweating and breathing my lungs out I like to watch movies, go to the theatre, visit concerts or listen to music (with a bit of bias for loud guitars). O’ yeah and a good beer now and then is also one of the better things in life even more if it’s enjoyed with good friends.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I use SETI@HOME since august 2003 not a very long time but than again I didn’t own my own computer before that time. To make it up a bit it was one of the first programs I installed. I think the internet is a great invention, not as big as the bicycle but it still is in my personal top 10. Although I think the full potential of internet is still not used, SETI@HOME is a good example of how it should be. We must share much more of our knowledge and possibilities. Don’t stay on an island but expend you’re borders. To search for extraterrestrial life is a very open minded idea. Something the world never can’t have enough of, we need creative and open minded ideas to become better humans (as well as an individual as for the human race as a whole).
The thought of finding life beyond earth’s borders must be a real trill. It must be something like an encounter with a wild animal in the forest. To me seeing such a bit of mysterious forest animal always gives me an exciting feeling. I can only imagine that an encounter with ET gives the same feeling only multiplied with a factor 1000.
For starters I hope ET has a good sense of humour without I don’t think they will ever understand us completely. How else could you explain the purpose of moist toilet paper! If course it’s not always a sunny day on our little planet but I still do believe in the good of mankind (I hope our extraterrestrial friends do also). To state this I can only say 4.865.813 SETI@HOME users can’t be wrong.
Last but not least a more down to earth reason to run SETI@HOME, it’s rather cool to say you’ re computer is searching for ET especially if it looks this great. And perhaps the most important reason: if there is even a remote chance that any female ET looks a bit like the Vulcan T’Pau from the New Startrek series, I really, really like to date that ET!
