Profile: Paul Boley

Personal background
Greetings. I am a freshman studying astronomy at the University of Arizona. I enjoy photography, playing the guitar, and, of course, all forms of astronomy. I am an avid reader of science fiction, and my favorite book, series, universe, etc. of all time is Dune, by Frank Herbert. Some of my other favorite authors include Isaac Asimov, Carl Sagan, and JRR Tolkien. I hope that some day, the human species will unite towards the common good of science. With any luck, this will occur in the near future, and we can finally make some progress as a species.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I think extraterrestrial (and intelligent) life certainly exists in the universe, if not in our own galaxy. I made this decision as a young child, because it is certainly an obvious one. There are so many stars in our galaxy alone that even if a rare event could happen only, say, 0.1% of the time, that millions of cases of that event would be present. If life is rarer then this, sadly, that number declines to the hundreds of thousands, the thousands, and maybe even the hundreds. But down to 1? I think not. However, even if that is the case, simply consider the possibly indeterminate number of galaxies in the universe, which may make the number of galaxies we have already observed appear as a speck of dust against infinity.
