Personal background
I am 47 years old, and I live in Chicago. I got my first computer after seeing 'War Games'. It was a Commodore 64. Also, I am old enough (don't laff!) to be an 'original' fan of Star Trek, and a reader of 'banned comics', and a Sci-Fi fan in general. My interests include computers (natch!), Artificial Intelligence, (much like my own! :-), and other stuff. I am also a published writer of science fiction and fantasy.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I definitely believe that other Intelligences exist in the Universe. Wasn't it Shakespeare that said 'there are more things in Heaven & Earth, than are dreamed of in your philosophies', or something like that? Isn't it egotistical, narrow-minded, and just plain stubbornness that 'some' of us still believe we are not only the center of Creation, but the only extant part of it as well? Doesn't the sheer mathematics of the Universe and Reality itself negate that supposition?
I believe Seti is a good, first step in the right direction. Should we transmit a beacon? What would we say? I think we have our hands full (fo now) just analyzing the Seti data. And, we really should 'get our house in order' before we invite company! I run Seti at home because, well, because I can, and I want to. Heck, I built a network to accomodate Seti on! I also believe that I will be the one lucky enough to detect and decode that first signal! :-)
