Personal background |
I'm just a habitual computer-geek that grew up listening to 80's music and good ole punk rock (Dead Kennedys rule!). Now I am a fairly productive member of society. I work as a "Senior Instructional Media Programmer" at a large aviation company. That means I write and maintain a number of mostly internal applications but some public websites using Coldfusion and Oracle. Fun stuff and I work with a lot of characters. Very bright people I must say. It's been a long time since I said it but I am very happy with my job. I am simply awestruck by the talent around me and the oppotunities that my job provides. One word would sum it up. Astounding!.... |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Don't have much to say that is SETI related. Just that it piqued my interest a number of years back. Then I had only slow boxes (100Mhz or less). At one point during SETI@Home classic I got the bug enough that I was trying to figure out how to get my Palm Pilot and a router I had (MIPS powered Linux) to crunch as well. My X-Box was crunching for a long time and even has a record uptime record for my household. It was running Gentoo-X Linux and never faltered. The only reason I shut down was due to thunderstorms.
I used to crunch for another big name team but realized I needed a more focused team. A team more focused and just plain-old more fun as it used to be. As a result I left my long-time team (a difficult decision) and joined SETI.USA. Amazing that when I joined we JUST broke the 5 million credit barrier. Today we are in 2nd place and knocking on SETi.Germany's door. This little and insgnificant team has become a true powerhouse. I'm once again happy to be crunching SETI.
Though I still have the crunching bug I currently only have 4 crunchers. They range from an Athlon XP 2100+ running Gentoo Linux to a Pentium D 940, also running Linux. Only one box, an Athlon XP 2500+, run Windows. All the rest are still Linux. Because of the hot summer months and high utility bills I was forced to shutdown a Sun Ultra 2 Enterprise (dual 300Mhz UltraSparc II box running Gentoo of course!) because it was just plain slow on SETI Classic (50 RAC a day). Now that we are all Enhanced I could no longer justify the cost of running it as a cruncher. I do hope to add another box in the near future. Perhaps a muli-proc multi-core Xeon or something like that.... |
