Profile: Chris Gutzman

Personal background
I am a resident of the Metropolitan area of Montreal, Canada and I have lived here my entire life, with a relatively fair amount of happiness.

I'm in my late twenties and my chosen field of study was and continues to be Biology, but that's never been a limitation on my interest. I am interested in everything from Geology to Quantum Physics, I just don't have a head for numbers so I stick to Biology at least in an academic sense. I like to travel, but don't do it as much as I'd like. I mean you can only go on world-ranging trips before you go broke. I guess I should have become an airplane pilot, but I suspect my fear of heights would get in the way. I also like to do a bit of photography but I don't know if I'm any good at that yet. I like to read, bicycle about the city and generally explore. I also must admit that I have been accused of being a Japanophile- Yes I stayed in Japan for a month and actually was comfortable there. Go figure. I may return some day to live when I have found the means to accomplish that.

Well that's all about me for now. Anything else you'll have to guess or ask me about in person.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes extraterrestrial life exists. If you consider the probability of life out there, even using conservative numbers, the universe is probably filled with all sorts of interesting critters. The question of how many sentient beings there are is unknown, but there has to be a few wandering about, and maybe they're in the mood to talk. Now to be honest, I don't think that non-human sentient beings would want to talk to us since we're still a long way off from having our act together, and that having been said, I don't really think we're mature enough as a sentient race to deal with interacting with extraterrestrials. At this stage, meeting the Little Green Men would just put us in a global inferiority complex.

But if we did hear a signal- and not necessarily meet those Little Green Men in person- perhaps the leaked radio waves off of Televison towers on Tau Ceti or somewhere, then in that case, it might be the beginning of our growing up and stop being so damned petty towards each other.

I support SETI@home because it's the smart thing to do- be listening if someone has anything to say.
