Personal background
Hello !!

I'm Jen, I'm 25 and I'm from Wales. I'm a member of the Wales Seti Users and I've been doing Seti for what seems like ages.

I was a lowly student in the University of Glamorgan when I started Seti, but now I'm working in Bridgend and living in Cardiff.

I started off with a Cyrix MII 333, with 64 mb of RAM and a 6gig hard disk. When I started, Seti would take at least 35 - 40 hours to complete a unit. When I upgraded to a K6-2 400 with 128mb of memory, I got it down to 30 - 35 hours.

Now My average unit processing time is around 10 - 11 hours, thanks to the aid of my 1ghz athlon :)

I should mention that there were rather large gaps in my Seti usage, because I kept forgetting to install it, or I would have major PC disasters that took me ages to solve.

I hope to improve on my Seti usage, and hopefully, our group will go onwards and upwards (better than the rugby team's latest performance anyway !)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Ok....

I think Seti, is a great idea. I've always been fascinated with Aliens and life on other planets. I remember hearing Bowie's Life on Mars song when I was about five and I guess that's what sparked my interest. I wouldn't say I'm any kind of expert on space and physics etc, but I'd really like the idea of my computer helping with the number crunching in some way. But what I'd really like to know is whether there is any other way of detecting extra terrestrial life - one that is overlooked.

I suppose I've got a bit of a romantic view of it all, If we did find extra terrestrial life, I'd hope that we wouldn't go all "Independance Day" on them, and hopefully they wouldn't do the same to us. I hope we could help each other out in some way, but perhaps I'm being rather naieve.

For the future, I'd really like the people at the Seti project to be able to scan more of the sky after we've done this bit.
