| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1) I do believe there is life out there in other places. The universe is just too large a place with so many stars out there for us to be a unique accident. The only current way a being from another world would be discovered is if they plopped right down infront of us and said hello from their big space ship. The current efforts of SETI@home and other projects is to listen to distant signals that could have taken 100's of millions of years to reach us. This is a long enough time that a civilization might die out or splinter away from "home" for whatever reasons. The obvious dangers in this is that an alien spacecraft visiting the earth might not be as happy-go-lucky or benign as we would hope for. Just take a look at the move "Indapendance Day" to catch my driff (although a waste of time to view except for the special effects involved int he makeing of it.)
2) I absolutely believe we should transmit something to the rest of the universe, and of course we are currently doing this. All our TV and radio waves are screaming away from us at teh speed of light. Unfortunatel, this may take, again, 100's of millions of years to reach anyone, and at a distance as great as this, the signal degradation would be too much to get "I Love Lucy" on. We need to work on some kind of faster than light transmission and shoot it over \100 of the sky. I know its not asking much, but it needs to be done, and I think we will eventually get bright enough to figure it out. I cant believe there is any kind of "Universal Speed Limit", and its only a matter of time that we break, like the sound berrior, the speed limit of light. As for the kind of information to send, lets send a cosmic address, who we are, what we're like and an open invite to anyone who gets it to drop on by.
3) I run SETI@home not just for the pretty colors, in fact I run the Linux command line version, and no pretty colors there at all (*shucks*). I run the program because I believe there is life out there, and there is only a matter of time before we fin |
