Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Having run SETI for some nine years on my private machines 24/7 I now just use it as a benchmark for new computers and for stability tests. The current consumption of my private computer is too high to still let it work 24/7 for SETI.
I think distributed computing is a very good mechanism to sort out complex problems. It brings together people from around the world, in this case looking into the sky for other civilisations. But as for the critics: since using BOINC the project is not that charming as it has been before. You do not see what you are doing anymore. I miss the old graphical interface of the pre-BOINC era, even if it may have spoiled some computing power.
