Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I'm sure life exists on places other than planet Earth, but I believe that the only way we'll discover it is to physically explore our universe. As to whether intelligent life exists, well there's a likelihood, as I see it, but we won't know until we find it, or it finds us.
As to whether or not there will be benefits to finding other life in the universe, I suspect there will be benefits, but it would be foolish to speculate as to what they would be until we find life that did not originate on Earth. As to the dangers, well they could be very great. One need only look at the problems that arose in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries when we were discovering new lands and peoples on this planet. Human history seems to repeat itself, with variations. We risk unutterably altering any life we find, and we risk it altering us and our cultures in much the same way. It's just an open-ended thing.
That said, it seems to me that we humans have to take the risk. We are explorers and seekers, regardless of how well or ill we do it, we seem to have a need to explore.
I don't know if we should send a targeted message to any life we may think we have found. A visit might be better. Moreover, we've sent a lot of 'information' out already. We have provided a fuller picture of who and what we are than any tailored message could either enhance or overcome.
I run SETI@home because I can, and I am willing to help the research. I think that, like most research, a lot can be learned whether or not the stated objectives are ever reached. |
