Personal background
I'm a 40 year old Applications Engineer for Rockwell Automation in Nashville Tn. I have interests in graphics, science fiction/fantasy, cooking, and good times with friends.

I'm also a supporter of manned spaceflight. Unmanned spaceflight has greatly increased our scientific knowledge of our solar system. However unmanned spaceflight lacks the ability to fire the imagination of the average person. I would like to see a return of the incrediable joy that most all of us felt when the first moon landing was accomplished. Return to the Moon! Mars Ho!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As long as I can remember I've been fascinated by the thought of space travel and life beyond our little blue planet. While I think the odds of actually detecting intelligent life beyond our planet is very low in my lifetime, the attempt is worthwhile for the psycological benefits.

The desire to find intelligences other than our own is a healthy response which we need to counter the fear inherent in our species for anything different. I think that the discovery of another intelligent lifeform would help mature our own species outlook. It would broaden our outlook. This can only be a good thing.

As far as constructing a beacon for others to detect, I'm somewhat cautious. While we are already broadcasting an inadvertant beacon with our current E-M spectrum communications, it is of low relative power and of only local (galactically speaking)consequence. I think we should wait for both our technology and social systems to mature a bit before constructing a beacon of our own. It wouldn't hurt to know a litle more about the universe before we blindly transmit a "we're here message".

I run Seti@home as my small contribution to effort. It's also a bit of race for me to see how many units my machine can complete ;-) !!

Regards,

Terry Rose
