Personal background
Before I get started here, my tag is not influenced by the SETI project. I got it from a picture that used to be in my aunt's kitchen a few years ago. On it was some odd creature that looked kind of like that alien from the movie ET on acid, and I thought ET on acid had a nice ring to it, so it became my tag. Anyway, I'm a student outside Albany, and I enjoy eating, sleeping, web site designing, and music.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I know for a fact that there is other life outside Earth, because I've seen an alien spacecraft before. Not up close, but it was definitely an alien craft. Way too fast for any plane, and too slow for a comet. I think it's a good idea to transmit a beacon to whomever or whatever may be out there, as it will surely aid in the effort to find alien life. What would be really neat, is to send some pictures, or something like that that can be understood by an alien life form. They probably wouldn't understand any earthly languages, so the best thing I could think of is to send a map of some sorts of Earth and how to get to it. We could map out all of what is around us for as far as we could, and point out our planet in our map and send it out. Another thing that might be neat would be to send out some kind of easy graphical quiz or an unfinished problem and see if we can get a reply with the answer. It would have to be graphical so that life that doesn't understand how to read our languages could do the problem. That would let us know it was definitely sent by intelligent life. I think we should totally bombard the places we think could most likely sustain intelligent life, like Alpha Centauri, with constant transmissions, and change them around a bit so they don't end up thinking it's just radiation. I run the software because I know that the SETI program is underfunded and needs as much support as it can get. Besides, why not use my CPU for something constructive rather than just games and stuff?
