Personal background
I'm a 30-something Software Development Director for a small software company in the heart of Yorkshire, England.

I'm a self-confessed computer geek who wouldn't be parted from his Macintosh - even in death. :-)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that there must, logically, be other life elsewhere in the universe. That, in the entire universe, life evolved only on Earth just seems to be so completely mathematically improbable to me that I wonder how any sane person can question it.

Whilst I do feel that the SETI project is a worthwhile one (I should, I've contributed every spare processor cycle in my hands at its disposal), I also believe that the project really is just a shot in the dark - that we will have to be extremely lucky to find evidence of other civilisations this way. There are three reason why I think we might be unsuccessful:

1) Other civilisations might not use radio waves at all;
2) SETI might not be scanning the right areas (after all, it's a big space out there);
3) Other civilisations might not want to be found, especially by one as primitive as ours - and they might have developed any number of technologies to disguise their presence.

Even so, I hope I'm alive for "First Contact", better still would be to have my name associated with it (oh the fame, the fortune, the women...)

Good luck SETI!
