Profile: Sebastiaan Roeling

Personal background
Hello, My name is Sebastiaan Roeling and I am a Mayanist from the Netherlands. My biggest passion is my study of the Maya-culture. I recently published my own book with the title: Terugblik op een Wereldtijdperk. This can be translated as: Retrospective View of an World Era (believe me, it sounds better in Dutch. If you are interested you can read more about my book and the Maya-culture on www.mayaweb.nl I have a Dutch as well as a English section on my website.

Because of my study about the Maya I became interested in the history of the Universe (because the Maya were great astronomers and filosofers about the principle 'time'). So after reading al lot of Hawking I ended up with some books of Erich von Daniken. He is convinced that the Maya god Kukulkan (Quetzalcoatl or Feathered Serpent) was a visitor from outer space.
Well, that is something my conservative mind can not and wil not accept. I don't believe that the Maya had anything to do with aliens what so ever, but it made me start thinking...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I don't believe that we are alone in this expanding universe. Why would we? And how did we got the arrogance to think that we are so special? I am looking foreward to the next 20 or 30 years. What a discoveries are there to be made!
There are different possabilities when we discover alien life (or when they will discover us):
It is possible that they are more technologically advanced then we are. In that case we might take adventage of their technology and solve some big problems (like water shortage, hunger and diseases. Although I am convinced that, in time, we can solve those problems by our selves). Perhapes they can learn us some interesting stuff about our history too. On the other hand, finding less develloped species is also a possability. I just hope that the human race, by then, is evolved enough to protect the young and less develloped species out there. But looking back at our history we will probably do more harm then good.

Of course SETI is looking for a sign of something out there that is at least just as develloped as we are. Therefore it isn't that unlikely that someone out there is doing just the same. But I don't think that we have to send some sort of message to them. The junk we are already sending out to space by sattelite is enough.

The reason I am running SETI at home is simple. Just imagine that this project find some proof of Extraterrestrial Life: I would heve been part of the most important discovery in human history!

I wonder what the Maya would have thought about aliens?
