Personal background

Hello Aliens (and any humans who might be reading this),

I am a 27 year old Indian citizen residing in New York, USA.
(My lawyer tells me you cannot legally use this information to abduct me :-)

I am a Computer Programmer and have been working as one for the last five years in the financial sector. I started out as a COBOL/JCL/CICS/DB2 programmer on an IBM AS400 mainframe. Now I am doing web-development using Java/JDBC/JSP/HTML/PHP/mySQL. The change has been a rather interesting experience.

In high-school and college I learned Basic, Pascal, Assembly, C-plus-plus(the seti-at-home profile-submission-parser removes the plus signs, thus the spelled out 'plus'), LISP, COBOL, dBase-IIIplus, dBase-IV, SQL, DB2 and Visual Basic.

I like to watch meteor showers and gaze at stars using a Polaris Telescope by Meade. So far I have seen the surface of the moon, the rings around Saturn, and Jupiter (interesting colors on this planet.) No, I have not seen any UFOs while star-gazing. At least, I don't think I have seen any, although the identity of one fast-moving zig-zagging light is debatable.

I also enjoy inline-skating, biking, and driving around just for fun. My favourite sport to watch is Cricket and to play is Soccer. I also play volley ball sometimes. Oh, I also enjoy programming in just about any language :-)

I can speak English, Hindi and Malayalam. I can also understand Bengali and little bit of Sanskrit. Malayalam is the state-language of Kerala, India, and Bengali is the state-language of West Bengal, India. Sanskrit is the root of all Indian languages. Hindi is the national language of India.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

Well, if I was convinced aliens did not exist, I would not be using my computer to do number crunching for Seti@home. I believe aliens could exist, but I would not bet my life on it since our best guess is just that, a guess.

Trying to figure out how the first human-alien contact will occur is like trying to find a black cat in a dark room. Nearly impossible. For all we know, aliens are already on Earth and we just have not realized it. On the other hand, we might be the most advanced race, in which case, would we want to make contact with the aliens, running the risk of irreversibly altering the course of their progress? After all, our progress has been rather violent and has resulted in the loss of millions of life. Can we be sure that our influence will not result in the loss of life of aliens? Would we want to be known as the race which brought violence into their midst, assuming they are a very peaceful race?

I believe we should spend a great deal of time trying to understand and overcome our own shortcomings before jumping to the conclusion that any human-alien contact will result in mutual progress.

I have heard too many people claim that if we were the only life in this Universe, then it would be a great waste of space. How typically human of us! How arrogant of us to think that the ultimate purpose of this universe is to support life. What if there is a greater purpose to this universe? Can we be sure there is no greater plane of existence? Something beyond life. Simply because we cannot see or experience anything beyond our own life does not mean something greater does not exist. As such, we might be the only life in this Universe and it might be our duty to discover that which is greater than ourselves.
