| Personal background |
| I am a 34 year old single mother of two boys ages 6 and 14. We're all 3 Gemini, in fact my children were born on the same day. Originally from Texas, I have lived in quite a few places, Germany, California, Nebraska and Louisiana. I've also traveled around the USA quite a bit. Some of my hobbies include, but are not limited to, reading, movies, billiards, camping and sports. I am also very interested in the SETI project. I find it fascinating and wish I had more of a head for figures. Since I do not, I participate in the best way I can, running my Seti@Home and hoping someone discovers other life within my lifetime. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I absolutely believe other life exists in the universe. I think it small-minded not to mention quite aggrogant to think Earth would be the only planet to harbor life in such a vast scope. I think there are many forms of life, many intelligent and many beginning or ending. I once read somewhere that 'Absence of Evidence is not Evidence of Absence'. As for dangers in discovery, I'm sure there are as with any foreign relations. But not something that could not be overcome, unless of course we ran into a race so advanced we were like ants to them. We should understand this as human beings and our first reaction to the unknown. When I hear people ask, "If they exist then why haven't they contacted us?"...I have to think to myself about the movie ET and what happened when the creature they called ET was discovered. I certainly wouldn't want to contact a race that wasn't ready for it and might want to dissect me... literally. As for sending a beacon, I'm undecided. Maybe there are races out there we don't want to find us. Like situations from Stargate SG1 or the old tv show V. Sure they're only make believe.....but are they?
All in all I'd have to say I participate in Seti@Home because I do want to meet other races and know there are other places with people, maybe even people like us, and perhaps if I am lucky get to visit them. Probably not in my lifetime but one can hope. Kudos to Berkeley University for taking on the task of trying. I admire you people and your efforts. |
