Personal background |
Born in San Diego, California in 1960. Grew up in Southern California, Venezuela and Alaska. I've got a Bachelors in Studio Arts from SDSU, which was fun but not very useful in terms of immediate earning potential. I now own a sign shop specializing in lettering for Emergency Vehicles, mostly firetrucks. I bought a Macintosh 512 back in 1985 because it was obviously the artist's tool of the future. I had to switch to PC's in '95 due to the power to dollar ratio. My hobbies are Art, restoring 60's cars and most things computer related. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I believe ET exists. I also beleive that intelligent life is probably quite rare. We might luck out and find something nearby but even if we detect something a long way out it will change our worldview fundamentally. I don't see any danger in discovering ET but then I don't see any immediate benefits either. We're already advertizing our presence here inadvertantly so perhaps we should be checking to see if anyone is out there who might be listening.
I doubt if it's a good idea to broadcast our presence here any more so than we are already, there might be beings on overpopulated planets looking for a new start... From a purely scientific standpoint I think that finding intelligent life and attempting to decipher it's transmissions would surely tell us a graet deal about the nature of intelligence and our assumptions concerning it.
I run SETI@home because my computers get bored and fidgety with nothing to do 16 hours out of the day and it gives them something of potential value (at least to me)to do. |
