Well, I'm a programmer and I thought that this would be a great exercise of distributed programming... even if SETI fails to hear anything.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that the possibility of extraterrestrial life is certainaly real.. there's just too much space for the inhabiants of earth to be the only living organisims anywhere, be they sentient or not.
