Profile: Fred Christman

Personal background
Retired Senior Systems Engineer from IBM, 70 years old. I find that I registered in January 2000, but I would have easily said that I had more years than that in the effort. I flushed up a little sense of pride to find that, even with my slow systems, only four percent of the contributors had more results than I. (written Sep '03)

It is interesting that at the outset a package of data cost me 50 hours of machine time, and now, with a fairly slow system, it takes between 4 and 5 hours.

I'm on dialup, and the flashing red satelite is like a panic button. I HAVE to stop everything and swap data with you.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, it's surely out there, and yes there are risks. Without risk taking, our ancestors would have starved to death without leaving the cave. And every great advance that we the living enjoy has cost lives of the adventuresome folk who assisted in bringing it to us. I know that this could be "the BIG one, Elizabeth", but you can bet we will go on until we find it, come what may.

I run SETI because it's there to run, and I can do it. I cannot go to Mars or space, or do many other things in the search for the truth. But I can run SETI, at least for a few more years, and I will.
