Since I was a child astronomy and space sciences have always fascinated me and I loved watching Sagan's Cosmos television series. That is something that really got me interested.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Absolutely, I believe there are other lifeforms in the universe. It is pretty hard to see something for the first time but, once we establish that their are other life forms out there (no matter how remedial) we will warm up to the idea of E.T.s. The formula that was shown in Carl Sagan's Cosmos program soundly shows the great chances of other life and the more planets we discover the greater those odds become.
Our time would be better spent listening than sending out a beacon. In fact, we have already sent a unintentional beacon with our world wide programming.
SETI@home and Astropulse are funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, NASA, and donations from SETI@home volunteers. AstroPulse is funded in part by the NSF through grant AST-0307956.
