Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Why do I run S@H? Well, my PCs have a lot of spare cycles so I don't mind having them used up for good causes. I participate in S@H because I am certain that there are other intelligent life forms in other biospheres other than the Earth. It is just a matter of finding them. For some reasons, some people choose to believe (selfishly) that we, humans, are something special. I dearly like to show them the evidence that we're indeed nothing special, but merely a product of chance:
- having the right ingredients (basic organic materials),
- being at the right place (on a planet that goes around a star that doesn't burn out too quickly, and orbits at a right distance) and,
- having enough time. My other contribution to DC projects is ClimatePrediction. I hate the idea that we, humans, being one of the co-habitants on this planet, are destroying the habitat of hundreds of thousands of other living species. We might be smarter and more adaptable than others, but this attribute does not give us the right to destroy others. I hope in participating in CPDN, we can show results to politicians and policy makers that we need to rethink our energy policies and to do nothing is not the right thing to do.
