Personal background
I am an artist who, like ET, has yet to be discovered. I long to cash-in commercially on my in-eptitude known as talent. This is an unfortunate stance since I think being an artist means you do your work as a work of love and not for enterprising reasons. Oh well, whoever concieved of that viewpoint has greater strength than I and I expect some kind of supportive income, or else an appetite for divine self destruction like Kafka's Starving Artist.

I am single and reluctantly so but in our money driven society finding an understanding counterpart has proven (currently) to be a useless endeavor.

I now find myself devoted to being a capitalist in as many forms as I can muster in order to allow my continued existance. My efforts so far have been fruitless but I keep trying. It is in fact a kindred stance to the SETI@home effort since it seems that across so much distance and space that ever finding another race of beings may perhaps, even though its against the odds, doesn't present itself as being possible. We are fortunate to live in a country and world where imagination and dreams can be a propellant. Our thoughts have brought us all here for this effort. The power of thought may yet really bring ET to us all. It is very nice to be a small part of something with so much potential in its hands.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
ET is out there given the sheer numbers of galaxies. I think we will find in our own Solar System that Europa will be a great surprise. It has all the conditions to favor it as a potential water based life supporting place. I therefore make the prediction that our first encounter with ET will take place on Europa. A type of fish? May be. Or perhaps a sentient similar to the ever smiling dolphins of our own world. Or maybe a malevolent flesh eating squid with one eye.

Will we find ET beyond our Solar System? I believe by using radio based technology that we will not find ET. Instead I speculate to myself that somehow higher order beings develop quark based radio technolgy. Or perhaps there is some form of non-baryonic material that can be made to travel the stellar distances on behalf of our communication efforts.

More and more it is clear to me that life is a spontaneous thing. It arises where ever conditions permit. I wonder about the civilizations that have gone before us in the universe. We won't be able to meet them. Perhaps some artifact of their existance may come to us. A sad thing for them to have existed alone like ourselves in the vast universe and to have no one like ourselves to have as a simple comfort that we are (all) not as alone as the current universe conveys to us.

We will develop technology that will allow us to cross the distances. Some have speculated that a worm hole device could be energized here on earth and a second device transported by ship to another place. Proximity with such a worm hole will open to the wormhole contained on the spaceship and will be able to maintain the "opening" from earth to the ship indefinitely. And when the ship lands somewhere after a millenia of travel, we will be able to "step through" in an instant and find ourselves there on a new place. A wait worth making and taking I think. And now with the advent of telomerase technologies and its long life giving effects, it may just be that such an occurance is not a thing of science fiction after all.
