Profile: John H. Bevan, PhD

Personal background
I am a quickly-approaching middle-age man from the Heartland of the US who stands proud in saying that I feel that we cannot be alone in this universe. It is too big for there to be only one form of intelligent life. As such, I gladly donate my processing power from my office machines to the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence.

During the day, I am the owner of a business I started just after graduating high school in 1989. During that time, I am serious, business-minded, and remain very reserved in regard to political and philosophical views. After the business closes, though, I enjoy levity, relaxation, and intellectual thoughts such as "what if" situations regarding the universe or, more accurately, the multi-verse. I ponder things such as what if a universe exists where it was not the gravitational aspect of the Super Force that was fractionalized but, rather, electromagnetism instead. I also consider research and potential developments in regard to black holes, postulated wormholes, and the idea of antimatter propulsion.

I feel the only way that we are going to get anywhere out of our solar system is by the development of a propulsion system based on something so much more reactive than anything we have now that the only option we can consider currently is antimatter. The only problems are that it is so difficult to contain (whether in a storage tank or the reaction with matter) and so extremely expensive to produce. It is the best and most "green" option, though, as the reaction is 100% efficient: no emissions whatsoever.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As stated above, I feel that there is other life elsewhere in the universe and we just need to keep looking through all the various proverbial haystacks to find those equally proverbial needles. I just hope that we don't find one by sitting on it and getting poked. (Not all societies even on this planet are peaceful, of course, so there is no guarantee that we will come across those who are interested in peaceful relations.)

I have long been a supporter of the project, having joined in 1999. Due to work, though, there have been times that I have not been able to participate. For certain stretches, I was on assignment overseas and, thus, could not effectively use the computers at my disposal for processing.

The only suggestions I have for the project are to do what they can to get even more people involved to process that many more work units and run a greater potential for finding the "United Federations of Planets" and "Klingon Empires" so that at least we will know we are not alone. I just hope that we avoid the "Borgs" in the universe. ;-)
