Personal background |
In a nutshell, I am just a bit of consciousness operating from a thirtysomething human body. I have a predilection for water, low light, ambient noises and melodies, seafood and that wonderful network called 'The Web'. If not actively stringing lines of codes or weaving pixels into visions, I can be found wandering along empty streets or fragrant coastlines - preferrably between dusk and dawn. I have been to many places and seen many faces, only to realize they are one and the same. I am now searching for that 'radically different' seed; that tiny, almost insignificant detail with the power to reshape everything we are. I am searching for it both within and without... and will not stop until it is found. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
What kind of extraterrestrial life are we looking for? Green 'men', martian bacteria, warp civilizations? We sometimes have such fixed expectations as to what extraterrestrial life should be I am afraid we might not recognize it even if it hit us in the face. What if those extraterrestrial sentient beings are not carbon-based; what if their natural form is gaseous or plasmic - or something unkown to us; what if their timeline is significantly compressed or expanded relative to ours; what if one of their second is like a century to us; what if one of their century is like a second to us; what if they do not use a linear language; what if their way of communicating is so radically different from ours we do not even recognize they have a language; what if they are so different from our expectations we simply pass them by without a second thought? We are so proned to measuring everything in the universe according to our own standards - scientific or not. Can consciousness only abide in an organic body? Can progress only be measured in terms of technological advance? Could there be a form of intelligence so remote from our own we would could miss it? I hope we look and search very meticulously and come across something so imensely different from our expectations even the way we think will have to be reconsidered. I would hate to see the discovery of extraterrestrial consciousness used as yet another opportunity to indulge in proud antropomorphism. We wouldn't learn much then... |
