Personal background
Hi,

My name is Carol. I live in South Carolina, where extra-terrestrial life abounds... after all... we have the world's oldest "living" senator ( Strom Thurmond)although I do say "living" advisedly.. it is still up for debate.... and the world's oldest "junior" senator, Fritz Hollings -80!.

I work for a non-profit association of municipalities. I work near the capitol, where I get to watch people attempt to drive their vehicles up the state house steps and/ or take out the African - American monument on the State House lawn with their cars. Fortunately, our Highway Patrol soon comes & puts up yellow crime tape to keep other misguided drivers away... :-)

I live with an alien named Iain... a.k.a the Mad Scot. Ok, Ok... he really is my husband and is only an alien to INS. He is the one who got me interested in SETI, that and overdosing on PBS "NOVA" segments on space. Besides, if I can meet & marry a man who lived 1/2 a world away via my PC, why not find other aliens?

Hope to hear from you-all

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Hmm, this feels like a test, but yes I think it only logical that life in some form exists in such a vast universe. It strikes me as incredibly egotistical to think we are the only life around. I don't know when we will discover other life. I suspect it will be accidental, somewhere & some way we never thought of before. I also think it will be in a form quite different from what we envision.

I believe we always stand to benefit if we learn more about others and ourselves. The danger is we will either be too naive or too ready to shoot first & ask questions later. Fear motivates as well as curiosity and both can have deadly results.

2. I am not so sure about a beacon. If we do have one I think I would put it somewhere neutral & watch to see what happened before I invited anyone in for tea.

3. I am a frustrated industrial engineer. I think wasted assets are a sin. I have more computing power than the moon shot. Why not put it to use while I am asleep or away hunting the ever shy haggis? LOL I think whoever thought up the idea of harnessing the unused computing power of a couple million home PC's is absolutely brilliant. Out of the box thinking for sure. Having people compete for number of hours spent is brilliant! The only thing I wish would improve is how oftern it takes multiple tries to upload completed units.
