Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm pretty sure there has to be other life out there. The recent discoveries of Extra-solar planets increases that probability. The only sad part is that though we may find intelligent life, there's little to no way of finding non-sentient life.

Transmitting a beacon wouldn't do us much good right now. By the time a signal would reach some part of the galaxy we hadn't scanned yet, we'd likely have found a faster way to get a signal there.

I run SETI@Home to give my machines something to do in idle time. Running the text-based version on the NT kernel makes it virtually transparent... I have no problems with processor cycle hoarding... I've even run high-intensity programs with SETI@Home crunching away silently in the background with no noticable difference.

All in all, I think it's likely our best current chance to find any extra-solar intelligent life, and a facinating excercise in decentralised computing. Kudos, and keep up the good work, Team Berkeley.
